The State of the Visual Arts in Philadelphia

A conversation about the present and the future of the Visual Arts in Philadelphia With
Jim Cotter, Arts & Culture Editor, WRTI-FM
Thora Jacobson, moderator, Chief Operating Officer, Philagrafika
Ben Olshin, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and History, University of the Arts
Douglass Paschall, Curator of Collections, Woodmere Art Gallery

Philadelphia was once the art capital of America – and known as the “Athens” of America. It was only in the early 20th century that New York surpassed us. How do we support artists today? Is the city a vibrant arts city? Do we really want it to be? What would that mean? Can we start thinking about the arts beyond the realm of economic revenue stream and tourism? Let’s talk about what can be done to make Philadelphia a more vibrant art city – where are we going, where do we want to go, how can we get there?
